To Send or Not? Catch-22 Situation for Worried Parents Amidst COVID Resurgence!
“Kartik, Wake Up.! It’s 7:00 AM, you have to get ready for school on time.” Sounds a familiar line from almost every household with question of to send or not never existed but thanks to a new found nemesis of conventional schooling, COVID-19, parents have almost erased it from their daily morning choir. For more than a year, the kids are cornered to the 4-walls of the house with eyes glued to a desktop/laptop or even worse, a smartphone for hours to attend classes online (Also read: How to own a fleet of Luxury Cars with a Monthly Salary of Rs.38,000? ).
The beginning of 2021 brought in lot of good news with many vaccines approved by International/ National authorities, COVID numbers gradually coming down, vaccination drive getting underway & picking pace schools also started to reopen in a phased manner. This brought lot of smiles & cheers to millions of children, though they became little lethargic for obvious reasons; the thoughts of meeting their buddies, enjoying meals with them & play around the premises exceeded any iota of weariness. However, when it seemed that 2021-22 session would bring classroom schooling back to normalcy, 2nd wave of COVID-19 has hit the nation with alarming rate in the month of March with daily cases going up to 62,000+ in a single day from just around 9,000+ daily cases in a matter of few days. The alarming rate at which Corona case are rising in the country specially in few states – Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Gujarat to name a few; fear of yet another lockdown looms over the nation. Though the concerned authorities are ruling out the nation-wide lockdown, the mentioned states have already started implementing stringent measures like weekend lockdown, night curfews, to curb the spread. This has yet again posed a huge uncertainty over the smooth operation of schools for next session that is just around the corner. In order to address parents dilemma to send or not ,the schools have been doing multiple counselling sessions with parents to make them aware of the precautionary measures undertaken by them including compulsory wearing of masks, periodical sanitization of the premises, maintaining social distancing, absolving morning prayers and assembly, sanitizing stationary & other equipment, thermal scanning, etc. However, the situation is very tricky for parents to take a call on sending their wards to school with 2nd deadly wave. It becomes imperative for government & administration to work in parallel on both vaccination-drive as well as curbing the spread of the pandemic to ensure that we do not lose out another full academic session as 2-straight year of students staying at home attending online classes will have long term repercussions on both academic capabilities as well as health aspect.
Do spare a thought for the parents who have not been able to send their toddlers to playgroup & kindergarten & the amount of stress they would be in with fear of yet another zero session, I shudder myself as a parent for my 4-year-old son who innocently wears his school bag every other evening and tells his mother, “Bye Mumma, I am going to School”.
